Derek Jarman's garden is in the flat expanse of shingle that faces the nuclear power station in Dungeness, Kent. He takes the viewer for a walk around the garden for this religious satire.
A woman, perhaps the Madonna, brings forth her baby to a crowd of intrusive paparazzi. She tries to flee them. Two men who are lovers marry and are arrested. The film explores Christianity, the media, police brutality, advertising, gay love and repression, the family, old age, AIDS and Jarman himself.
