The story of the last great Italian painter of the Renaissance, Caravaggio was a bad boy of Italian aristocracy, who scandalised society with his erotic portrayals of naked saints, invariably posed by street urchins and prostitutes. It follows Caravaggio through his childhood, his initial artistic failures, his later successes as he attracts the attention of a sympathetic cardinal, and his destructive relationship with a handsome gambler. Jarman depicts Caravaggio as man of profound passions, physically and emotionally violent, and as a bisexual with a taste for rough trade.
Jarman also deliberately introduces anachronisms into the film - a car, typewriters, pocket calculators - making use of a similar revisionist theory to that which Caravaggio applied to his paintings.
