The Sacrifice is Andrei Tarkovsky's final, visually intoxicating and profoundly spiritual masterpiece about the end of the world. The revelry is interrupted by a radio annoucement: World War III has begun, and Mankind is only hours away from utter annihilation. Each of the guests reacts differently to the news: the most dramatic response is Alexander's, who promises God that he'll give up everything he holds dear—including his beloved 6-year-old son — if war is averted. The Sacrifice is a devastating, but powerfully reaffirming film on love, humanity, and faith. The burning house of The Sacrifice would thus represent not only the culmination of Tarkovsky's final film but of his life and work as a whole.
