Solyaris

A psychologist's space travel

Director: Andrei Tarkovsky

Cast: Donatas Banionis   Natalya Bondarchuk

Footage: 165min

Year: 1972

Solaris is a planet that seems to be nothing but ocean.  A futuristic space agency has set up an orbital station to study it. After a number of bizarre happenings on the station, a sort of space-travelling psychiatrist, is sent to investigate. He finds that one of the last three residents has just committed suicide, and the other two are acting very curiously. The psychiatrist considers it is any mental problems plaguing the dwindling number of cosmonauts on the station. Soon, he discovers that Solaris' water is actually a type of "brain," which brings out repressed memories and obsessions within the cosmonauts on the space station.

This space travel is an exploration beyond the vessel of humanity, a journey to extend the territorial bounds of man, only to find the vast frontier of his own subconscious. However, because the film is very obscurity we often find many unlike explanations.
