Adapted from the absurd comic by Samuel Beckett, the film is the first feature by the director. The story is dark and slow-paced. The protagonist is an unnamed hero roaming the empty and deserted streets of St Petersburg. With a head injury he is released from the hospital and begins searching for a place to stay. Trams trundle into focus, there is no-one inside. He finds a number of rooms with assorted eccentric characters and situations, nevertheless, still has no choice but to sleep in a cemetery. Then he is collected by a slightly deranged prostitute who insists that he live with her. Soon the girl is pregnant at that point she kicks him out into the streets again. |
