A
Sicilian mother is pining for her estranged son. The son who left many years ago has become a prominent Roman movie director. He finally returns to his home village to attend the funeral of the town's former film projectionist
who is also his most important friend.
When
he still the boy Toto townsfolk are used to watching films in "Cinema
Paradiso" to escape from the grim realities of post-war Italy. The
boy Toto makes friends with the old projectionist there. One day filmstock erupts into a violent fire that blinds the projectionist.
Brave Toto saves his friend's life and then becomes the new projectionist. The years pass and he grows up to fall in love with a beautiful girl who breaks his heart. She is gone by the time he
retires from army. The boy leaves the village according the old
projectionist's advice.
That was all thirty years ago and now
famous Salvatore has come to say his final good-bye to his life-long friend, who has left him a little gift in a film can.
The gift is the films cut off because the town censor insists that all kissing scenes be edited
out. Salvatore watches it and suddenly finds everything in his life made crystal clear.
