One of Angelopoulos' most ambitious films, set in 1900, years after the Paris Commune, it is a tale of socialism first deformed and then destroyed by an authoritarian leader. It's also an epic contemplation of history and of how ideals are often corrupted by power.

Alexander is a legendary bandit who escapes prison and starts fighting the government. He kidnaps some British aristocrats to hold them as ransom against amnesty for himself and his men. When he returns with his hostages to his native village, he and the local ruling schoolteacher have a go-around on how the town is to be run. And then Alexander slowly turns from liberator to tyrant.
