A is an American film director of Greek ancestry. He is shooting a film based on the history of his own family that reflects some of the most tumultuous events of the 20th Century. The protagonists are actually A's mother Eleni and her two former lovers. The characters in the film move as though in a dream. From Kazakhstan to Siberia, Italy, Germany, Canada, and America, they are seeking each other all along. The trio is eventually reunited but A's daughter falls into a deep depression and runs away from home.

In this film Angelopoulos' typical long shots are shorter and the camera is placed closer to the characters.

A是一位美籍希腊裔导演，正在根据自己的家庭变迁拍摄一部反映20世纪那些最动荡岁月的电影。主角实际上是A的母亲Eleni和她从前的两个恋人。电影里人们像是在梦中漫游。从哈萨克斯坦到西伯利亚、意大利、德国、加拿大、美国，他们一直在互相寻找。最终三人重聚了，但A的女儿却又因心情压抑而离家出走。
