Adapted from the famous late 1930's antiwar book of the same name written by the director himself. On the last day of WWI, Joe Bonham, a young American soldier is wounded by a mortar shell. He has lost his arms, legs, eyes, ears, mouth and nose. He is kept alive by doctors who assume he is a vegetable and keep him in a warehouse. But in fact Joe remains conscious and able to think. The only one thing that he can carry out is immersing himself in a world of his own memories and dreams. A compassionate nurse discovers that Joe is conscious. He gets the chance of communicating to his doctors, via Morse code. He requests that either to be put in a glass coffin as a demonstration of war, or to be mercifully killed. Nevertheless, he is denied and must keep on living as a living dead. The MTV for Metallica's song "One", featured excerpts from the film. |
