Adapted from famous Urdu writer Saadat Hasan Manto's short story 'Toba Tek Singh', the film is a re-imagined reflection of the events in India, and the newborn Pakistan, around 1947.

It is set in both a lunatic asylum in Lahore and in a conference room in the governmen office building. The asylum inmates get into the same situation with the outside people: Muslims to asylums in Pakistan, Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan to India. At the same time the rulers are drawing the new border.

The same actors playing both the inmates and the rulers, with events in the asylum mirroring the actions of the ruling order. Mirrors and veils play a large part in the film.

In 1947 over 14 million people changing countries in the partition of India and Pakistan and up to a million were killed in the conflict.
