The story revolves around a young nurse named Alma and her patient, a well-known actress named Elisabeth. Suddenly disgusted with any kind of artifice or falseness, Elisabeth withdraws into muteness. Alma is seemingly a chipper young woman, keeping up a stream of cheerful chatter as the two share a summer cottage. Gradually, the two women's personalities merge and the boundaries between their identities begin to blur. Eventually, Alma turns into a version of Elisabeth, full of disgust and self-loathing.
