Based on a novel by Alexei Tolstoi, the film is noted for its spectacular sets and costumes heavily influenced by the Russian Constructivist movement. It also influenced the more famous Metropolis (1927) directed by Fritz Lang. Produced only seven years after the Russian Revolution, not surprisingly, it employed science-fiction to promote the Communist cause.

A mysterious radio message is beamed around the world, among the engineers who receive it is Los. He builds a spaceship and travel to Mars with a crusty soldier and a pursuing detective. After they join Aelita, the daughter of the ruler of a totalitarian state on Mars, they begin a proletarian uprising.
