This film was shot in Hulun Buir Aimag, Inner Mongolia.

The shepherd Gombo lives with his wife, three children and grandmother in a tent on the Mongolian steppe. Chinese population control policies made an exception to the "one child" rule that applies to the rest of China, and allows families within the ethnic Mongolian minority to have two children. With three children already, the wife knows that her third child will be disadvantaged, denied school and other government services so she asks her husband to buy condoms.

One day a Russian truck driver, Sergei, gets stuck with his truck nearby. Gombo takes Sergei back to his farm, and after initially being appalled at the lack of civilization, the Russian becomes enchanted with the peaceful life of the backwards countryside and decides to stay. Later Gombo make a trip with Sergei to the nearest town where his wife wants him to buy condoms and a TV set. Gombo discusses the matter with his local lama, who doesn't offer any advice.

One impressive scene is an hallucination experienced by Gombo as he brings home the television set for the family. He sees a vision of his ancient ancestor, Ghengis Khan, there to warn him against modern ways.

牧民贡巴和他的妻子、三个孩子以及祖母生活在草原上的蒙古包内。中国只生一个好的计划生育政策对少数民族网开一面，允许蒙古人生两个孩子。但他们已经生了三个，妻子知道这对孩子不利，会无法读书，也享受不到政府福利，所以她要丈夫去买安全套。

一天，一个俄罗斯卡车司机谢尔盖在附近抛锚，贡巴将他带回牧场。经过了起初因为不了解对方文化而带来的惊骇，俄罗斯人被乡间的静谧生活所迷醉，决定留下来。后来贡巴和谢尔 盖进了一趟城，因为妻子让他去买安全套和电视机。贡巴向当地的喇嘛寻求启示，但他什么都没有讲。

影片中有一个令人印象深刻的镜头，那是贡巴带着电视机回家路上的幻觉。他看到了自己的祖先，成吉思汗，告诫他要与当今世界斗争。
