It was the first Russian film to score an American success during the Cold War era. And it is a relatively simple, uncomplicated story. 19-year-old Russian soldier Alvosha is granted a visit with his mother after he single handedly fends off two enemy tanks. En route to his home, the boy uses up much of his valuable leave time through his efforts to help others. He also encounters the devastation of his war-torn country, witnesses glimmers of hope among the people, and falls in love.  He finally gets to see his mother for a few precious moments before being called back to active duty.

He didn't return from the war. However, his mother still stands at the end of the road waiting for her son Alvosha even though being aware of that he can't come back.
