Andrzej Wajda's first feature film.

During the Nazi occupation of Poland, a generation of youth comes of age. Stach is one of them. He and his friends start with spontaneous acts of defiance, which can prove deadly, but have no organized purpose. Then he is introduced to the underground resistance guided by an avuncular Communist organizer. When he sees the valiant and beautiful Dorota, a leader of the Youth, he volunteers and falls love with Dorota. Soon Stach is engaged in dangerous efforts to fight oppression and indignity, maturing as he assumes responsibility for others' lives. Unfortunately Dorota is arrested, Stach's heart is stricken. In the meanwhile the Underground recruits many new members. A new generation is growing up.
