One of the landmarks of Polish cinema.

Set in the 17th century, Father Suryn has been sent to investigate a case of demonic possession at a convent after a local priest was burnt for sexually tempting the nuns. Mother Joan, who brings on the collective hysteria of the group, is said to be the most possessed of all the nuns. Several attempts are made to exorcise the demon. But even self-flagellation cannot stop them.

In desperation, Father Suryn consults an aged rabbi who suggests that the "demons" are really manifestations of human nature. And he finds himself becoming possessed by the Mother Superior. To help her, he kills two innocent people to be forever a prey of the devil and thus allow her freedom.
