In the theatre a performance of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar has just ended. All actors are inmates of the Roman maximum security prison Rebibbia. After the performance they must return to their cells.
Performed by convicted criminals, the film blurs the boundaries between drama and reality. Over the course of six months, the directors followed the prisoners as they rehearsed and performed Julius Caesar. These men all feel proud and strangely touched, as if the play has somehow revealed to them the depths of their own personal history.
In the last shot an inmate says, "Since I have known art, this cell has turned into a prison."
