"The Way We Laughed" tells the story of two brothers, Giovanni and Pietro, who move from Sicily to Turin, in northen Italy, in the interest of crafting a better life for themselves. These are six years in the lives of two brothers from Sicily, from 1958 to 1964. These years are depicted in six days chosen at random, each bearing its own one-word title.

Pietro has already been in school in Turin for some time when Giovanni arrives. He is studying to be a teacher. Giovanni is an uneducated laborer from Southern Italy. He sees the bright Pietro as his family's best hope for making their way out of poverty, and he goes to work to support his brother so that Pietro can focus on his studies. But as time goes on, Giovanni's simple dream of a better life proves to be different than Pietro's personal ambitions.

Over the years, the brothers undergo a series of ups and downs, with Giovanni becoming steadily more important in the Turin underworld, and Pietro slipping further and further away before eventually returning to his studies with renewed vigor.
