Each of the episodes in this three-part stars Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni.

The first segment is entitled "Adelina". Adelina, a Neapolitan slum marketer, assists husband in his contraband-cigarette racket. She manages to avoid going to prison by having one pregnancy after another.

The second segment is entitled "Anna". Anna is the elegant wife of a rich Milan industrialist. So obsessed is she with material possessions that she's willing to walk out on her lover when her smashes her sports car.

The third segment is entitled "Mara". Mara, a Rome high-priced prostitute, unwittingly leads a young trainee priest to fall in love with her and decide to leave the seminary. Mara urges him to return to his former life though she is actually quite attracted to the young man.
