Adapted an Alberto Moravia novel, the film explores the rise of fascism in Italy. It is a study of one man and an entire society.

The story opens in 1938 in Rome. Marcello, a respected professor of philosophy, has just taken a job working for Mussollini. He willingly becomes an anonymous tool of the state. In a flashback to his childhood we learn he suffered trauma at the hands of a homosexual and began to associate sex with violence.

Now Marcello is called on to kill a former college professor. He believes the mission will atone for the terrifying youthful incident. Courting the profeesor's young wife Marcello fall love with her. But he still let her die, and he watches the hideous execution with an opaque face.
