Set in the Italian town of Parma at the beginning of 20 century. The film, with a decidedly socialist agenda, examines two lives that begin the same year in rural Italy: Alfredo, the weak-willed son of the aristocracy and Olmo, the hardy, courageous son of peasants.  As they grow, the boys become friends, mystified by the tensions that separate their families. Wealthy Alfredo sinks into dissipation, while poverty-stricken Olmo becomes a firebrand labor leader and communist. Alfredo plays nice with the burgeoning fascists; Olmo, on the other hand, engages in a long-standing battle against the minions of Mussolini.

故事发生在二十世纪初意大利帕尔马的小镇上。电影坚定地站在社会主义立场上审视着意大利乡间开始于同一年的两种生活：Alfredo，意志薄弱的贵族之后，和Olmo，坚强勇敢的农民之子。他们在成长中成为朋友，但让他们不解的是两个家庭之间关系紧张。富裕的Alfredo沉湎于放荡生活，而穷困的Olmo成为了农民的带头人，也是一个共产主义者。Alfredo和日渐强大的法西斯关系融洽，但Olmo却投身于反抗墨索里尼党羽的长期斗争中。
