The story is based on the kidnapping of Italian Christian Democratic Party head Aldo Moro at the hands of the Red Brigade in 1978.

A young woman, Chiara, moves into a new appartment with her boyfriend. Her life, is a carefully constructed act, concealing her actual existence as a member of the extreme Italian terrorist group, Red Brigade. The apartment is going to be used to house a kidnapped government official Aldo Moro. Chiara also begins to feel attracted to Enzo , a co-worker at her office job who has similar political leanings, but strongly disagrees with the Red Brigade's tactics. While Moro is hidden in the secret cell behind a bookcase, Chiara spends hours watching him  through a peephole, as he defends his political actions in a mock trial conducted by Mariano. Meanwhile, the Brigade's demands get less and less defined as they try Moro and condemn him to death, sparking a severe crisis of conscience for Chiara.

The film is quiet and thoughtful, but it captures the sad spirit of the era, and it achieves its strongest impact in explicitly fusing the personal and the political.
