Gabbeh, which means "rug" in Farsi, is handwoven carpets with patterns inspired by tribal life of southern Iran. And it is also the name of a character in this film, a young woman who is in love with a horseman. On the banks of a stream, an old woman and her husband are washing their gabbeh, discussing the meaning behind the figures sewn upon it. The rug depicts a girl in blue and a man in red, together on a white horse. Suddenly, the girl on the tapestry seems to come to life — her name too is Gabbeh, and the blue dress she wears is identical to the one worn by the old wife. Gabbeh talks about her life, which is told in the fabric's patterns: Her father refuses to allow her to marry until a series of stipulations have first been met; as she travels with the tribe, her lover follows at a distance on horseback. As she tells her sad story, the elderly man of the couple becomes more enchanted, believing that he can offer Gabbeh the happiness she is seeking, while his wife grows impatient and then disgusted with her husband's attempt at recapturing his youth. The film often looks like a pretty, primitive painting. Makhmalbaf raises questions about the position of women in traditional societies and the struggle between love and freedom for these nomadic people. |
