The story takes place in the years following the collapse of the 1848 revolution against Hapsburg rule led by Kossuth and the Austrian hegemony re-established. In order to root out the legendary Sandor Rozsa’s guerilla, the army rounds up suspects and jails them in an isolated fort. The authorities do not have the identity of the guerilla leaders, who are supposed to be present among the prisoners. So they subject the prisoners to a sophisticated, ritualized form of psychological torture.

Jancsó’s formally choreographed camera movements later developed into a mannerism.
