Fassbinder’s second feature adapted from his own scalpel-sharp experimental play, of the same title. The film centers on the rootless but circumscribed lives of a group of young working class people. They hang around their dull Munich apartment complex, smoking cigarettes, sipping beer, and sleeping with each other – sometimes for money. A migrant worker from Greece joins the group and incites hostility and jealousy among them. Then he is insulted as a "Communist" and "Greek dog" and attacked.

It is both a personal expression of alienation on the part of the filmmaker and a comment on the persistence of xenophobic scapegoating in German society. “Katzelmacher” is a Bavarian slang term, meaning vaguely “troublemaker,” also has a more literal meaning “cat-screwer”. Fassbinder offered another metaphorical explanation: “a foreigner, especially someone from the South, who is supposed to enjoy a great sexual potency”.
