La Petite Jerusalem is the nickname of Sarcelles, a low-income housing neighborhood near Paris which is populated mostly by Jewish emigrants.

18-year-old student Laura has very little use for the religion of her Orthodox family, which includes her superstitious Tunisian mother, older sister Mathilde, and brother-in-law Ariel. Because Laura isn't interested in following the precepts of their religion that circumscribe the lives of the devout, particularly Jewish women. Instead, she throws herself into the study of Kant which even leads her to emulates "philosopher's walk". It also gives her a chance to make eye contact with handsome Djamel, an Algerian Muslim with whom she works on a school cleaning crew. Obsessed with philosophical theories, Laura thinks love is a fraud — the enemy of noble thought. But as her desire for Djamel grows, Laura soon finds her life growing increasingly unstable.

While Laura's life is disrupted by their love affair, her old sister Mathilde finds that her interpretation of religious doctrine has stifled the relationship with her husband Ariel. Thinking that it was unacceptable for a "modest" Jewish woman to even touch her husband's genitals, Mathilde seeks advice from the Mom at the local mikvah to the possibility of sexual pleasure within marriage and to the different ways in which religious faith can be enacted.

Director Albou appears to be envisioning a middle ground for the two sisters, who are affectionate with one another but still look down on the other's modes of thinking.
