A young Parisian filmmaker Alex, due to leave next day to do his obligatory military service, wanders around Paris, lost without the girl-friend with whom he has just broken up. He is obsessed with a need for romantic fulfillment, falls in love with Mireille from the first time he hears her voice over an apartment intercom. Later the filmmaker sees her by the Seine. They finally meet in person at an elegant party and begin a long, strange conversation over a kitchen table. The two find themselves unable to resist their mutual neediness and this leads them to tragedy.
