A little donkey is suckled by its mother, then baptized 'Balthazar'. Passed from one owner to the next, Balthazar is both witness to and victim of their stories, their suffering, their violence.

It is first the loving plaything of small children in rural France, then a working beast of burden. As the children grow up, the donkey's fortunes worsen. The now-teenaged Marie finds herself drifting into more and more destructive situations, including involvement with a local juvenile delinquent. Balthazar escapes and comes back and for a moment is safe. Toward the end of his hard life, the burro becomes the property of a gentle old man who sees him as a reincarnated saint.

一头小驴被妈妈哺育着，后来被授以教名Balthazar。从一个主人转到另一个主人，Balthazar是他们的故事、痛苦和暴虐的见证者和受害者。
