As a graduate in Roman Philology and lecturer at the University of Liège in Belgium, Olivier Smolders also teaches at INSAS, the Brussels film school. He has written various books on literature and the cinema, and produces films via his own production company, Les Films du Scarabée.

He believes that groups of words can create a powerful impact accompanying a specific tempo and frames so always applies poems and prose in his films.

Based on the true events of Issei Sagawa, a Japanese student who in 1981 murdered and cannibalized a Dutch woman named Renée Hartevelt in Paris.

In the final shot of the movie he cuts himself in the stomach with a knife. The film shows no emotion at all.

This film has no narration at all. Smolders and co-director Thierry Knauff intercut shots of several children at a Belgium psychiatric clinic. It captures the intense monotony of lost and disturbed young minds, and show us sorts of mental illnesses and anguish.
