This film is one of the key works of the Czech New Wave.

A successful symphony musician comes to a bucolic village with his girlfriend to visit an old  school friend who is the director of the local music school and plays an occasional funeral. The visit allows the friends to reflect on themselves and how their lives have turned out. The film compares the streamlined urbanity of the visitors with the homely simplicity of the villagers. In the director's eyes it is the more tranquil country life that wins out.

一个事业成功的交响音乐家和他的女友来到一个牧歌般的乡村，拜访一个老同学，后者是当地音乐学校的指挥，偶尔也为葬礼演奏。这次见面促使两个朋友对自己对生活展开了思考。电影将来访者高效的城市生活与村民们朴素简单的农家生活做了比较。在导演看来，宁静的乡村生活更胜一筹。
