Glauber Rocha was only 25 when he directed this feature debut. It’s part Biblical myth, part epic ballad.

The film is set in the drought-plagued Sertão in the 1940s. Manuel is a peasant working on a ranch. When his boss tries to cheat him out of his wages Manuel kills him and flees with his wife, Rosa. They first join a black preacher who self-proclaimed messianic. On another day the preacher asks for a baby to be sacrificed, then  Rosa turns to killing. Then they change into an honorable bandit. Nevertheless they fall into despair again. They discover that man's destiny is in his own hands.

故事发生在1940年代旱灾肆虐的Sertão。Manuel是在牧场上干活的农民。牧场主试图靠欺骗少付工钱，Manuel杀了他，并和妻子Rosa远走高飞了。他们先是加入了一个自称救世主的牧师的队伍，后来有一天牧师要把一个婴儿作为祭品，Rosa就杀了他。接着他们转投一个正直的匪徒麾下。然而他们再次绝望了。他们发现人的命运只能掌握在自己手中。
