It's the feature debut of writer and director Jessica Hausner.

Rita is a misfit moving between childhood and womanhood. She grows up in a small town with her strict Catholic parents. Rita doesn't care for her schoolmates therefore largely ignored by them. Her teachers find her rude, and her mother and father have just given up on trying to get her to change her ways.

Rita has developed an intense curiosity about sex. Her sexual awakening leads her to intimacy with a schoolboy too young, and a bus driver too old. However, these encounters isolate her even more. Her father eventually becomes her shooting target in the range.

"Lovely Rita" is also a song by The Beatles performed on the album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
