The film's themes are involving inter-generational conflict and the rise of new temptations. Set in a dreamlike rural Japan, the story starts out to be about an adolescent boy's attempt to escape his overprotective mother and then becomes a filmmakers desire to confront his own elaborated creation. Sex is used as a vehicle for the expression of themes and violence is often overt, emblematic of the discord attending the upheavals in Japan as it shifted from a society bound by traditional rules of decorum that valued homogeneity to one that is decidedly modern in its acknowledgement of the place and power of the individual.
