Yumiko marries Ikuo, a childhood friend, and gives birth to a young son. But Yukimo is haunted by visions of death. She has a recurring nightmare in which her grandmother leaves her home to go to the village of her birth to die. Then her husband Ikuo walks in front of a train — an apparent suicide. Yumiko enters an inner landscape of sadness. Later, she settles down in an arranged marriage with Tamio, a widower who lives in a faraway fishing village. But she finds the past continues to trouble her.

由美子嫁给了青梅竹马的朋友郁夫，两人生了个儿子。但由美子却被死亡的幻象所困扰，她总是梦到祖母离家出走回到出生的地方去结束生命。接着丈夫郁夫走在铁轨上丧命，看起来是自杀。由美子陷入悲痛之中。后来她经撮合跟远方渔村的鳏夫民雄结婚了。但发现过去的事依然困扰着她。
