This is the directorial debut of Hugo Santiago, who was an assistant to Robert Bresson (worked on The Trial of Joan of Arc).  The screenplay was written by the director, in collaboration with Jorge Luis Borges, from a story penned by Borges in collaboration with his friend Adolfo Bioy Casares.

A volunteer troop of middle-aged men led by an old man trying to stop an invasion of the city of Aquileia. But their defense goes wrong at every turn, and the mission becomes more and more dangerous and twisty.

A kind of updating of Homer’s Iliad, the film uses a mix of film noir, political thriller, nouvelle vague, and science fiction elements to retell the story. It is lyrical, unsettling and infinitely suggestive.

这是Hugo Santiago执导的处女作，他曾担任Robert Bresson的助手(拍摄《圣女贞德的审判》)。剧本由导演本人与博尔赫斯合作撰写，改编自博尔赫斯和他的朋友卡萨雷斯以前写的故事。

这部电影是新版的荷马史诗“伊利亚特”，它使用了黑色电影、政治惊悚片、新浪潮和科幻小说等多种素材的组合来讲述这个故事。它富有诗意，令人不安，又让人浮想联翩。
